In the spirit of the previous craziness I unearthed myself from the National Archives, here’s a bit from the Library of Congress digital collections. The intent of this 1880s image is a bit less furtive than those ones from NARA—“German POWs love America and bookmobiles and dachshunds” or “Communism is a mean bear we will kill with our words,” respectively—but that just means it’s more enrapturingly disorienting.
So here’s to Miss Bernhardt, to the Ocean Express, and to archiving all sorts of strange and confusing things for posterity!
